Election Information
The La Mesa City Council is comprised of five members, the Mayor and four Council Members, elected at-large, for four-year terms. A person is ineligible to hold office as a member of the City Council if that person has served in the office for three consecutive terms.
Municipal Elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years.
The City Clerk is the Elections Official, and is responsible for coordinating the Election with the San Diego County Registrar of Voters Office, as well as distributing nomination papers, processing ballot measures and petitions, and maintaining all campaign statements and conflict of interest filings required by the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC).

November 5, 2024 Nomination Period:
The nomination period for these offices begins on July 15, 2024 and closes on August 9, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. If an incumbent does not file for re-election by or on August 9, 2024, this deadline is extended to August 14, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. to all non-incumbents.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTS (Candidate Statements will be posted after the close of the Nomination Period)
General Qualifications
Candidates must be all of the following:
- A U.S. Citizen
- At least eighteen (18) years of age on or before Election day
- A resident and registered voter in the City of La Mesa
Candidate Fees
There are no City of La Mesa filing fees, however, candidates who choose to have their "Candidate Statement of Qualifications" printed in the sample ballot issued by the County Registrar of Voters must bear the actual cost of printing and distribution. Candidates who opt for this printing are required to pay the fee when the nomination paper and forms are filed with the La Mesa City Clerk.
