State and Federal Fair Housing Laws prohibit discrimination in the sale, rental or financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, ancestry, disability,source of income, any arbitrary status, or familial status.Familial status includes children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18. If a housing provider refuses to rent or sell a home, offers unequal terms, quotes different prices, or applies different policies based on the protected classes, he or she is violating Federal and/or State Law.
The City of La Mesa, under the direction of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), has a responsibility to affirmatively further Fair Housing. The City strives to reduce housing discrimination in the rental, sales, lending, and insurance markets in compliance with the Fair Housing Act.
Fair Housing Services
CSA San Diego County is under contract with the City of La Mesa to provide Fair Housing and tenant/landlord services. CSA mediates tenant/landlord disputes and investigates/monitors complaints of discrimination. They also provide community education and awareness seminars on tenant/landlord and Fair Housing rights and responsibilities.
